Переглядів 590Рік тому
Thursday night of the 2022 National Old-time Fiddlers' Contest in Weiser, Idaho. The various jam sessions around the campground were bumpin' breakdowns as usual, but on this evening Tristan decided to invite life long friend and picker Jim French over to Camp Clarridge to play a few waltzes. This one written by the great Buddy Spicher. This video is in memory of Jim French.

Joy of Fiddling has long been a fan of what Tristan can do with a waltz. In Weiser, Idaho during the 2022 National Old-time Fiddlers’ Contest, word came around he had invited long time friend and picker Jim French over to his camp specifically to play some waltzes. Joy of Fiddling grabbed the camera. Tristan has known and played with Jim since he was a little kid. On this particular evening the...

I couldn't tell you how many times I've had your videos (especially this one) on repeat, either to learn to play tunes from, or as backround music while stidying for school etc. This set in particular is one to blame for sparking my love for fiddling when I started late 2019. It's been so great to finally meet and jam with some of these wonderful musicians in person over the past year or two, and I can't wait to keep learning!!

Absolutely love getting comments like yours, @allisonleroux763. The Joy of Fiddling channel has a lot of goals, but inspiring and educating are top of the list. On a personal note, it was because of this video I was introduced to (and enabled to learn) "Surveyor's Reel", which led me to the composer Andy De Jarlis, which led me to Métis style fiddling. Welcome to the fiddle family!

I've come to appreciate what makes this Arkansas Traveller so special. It is the way she leans into those low notes. I've seen other (right handed) players and the emphasis is more or the high pitch, yet Katrina's is tone is rich in those middle and bass notes. She lingers longer and the notes stand out. Just wonderful!

But lifting the right( bow) arm and high elbow to reach and power the tone of the heaviest string ( G) needs the strongest pull away from the instrument. That's why it evolved in 400yrs to be on the left of the player side .Now the most delicate string ( E) to play on evol ved to the players right therefore. So to equally maintain this evolutionary efficiency therefore , left handed bowing needs a mirror image of string layout.

Id like to add that my 2 student concertos ;Mozart G maj op 216 and Max Bruch G min both start with strong down bow G string high power arm weight -The Moz with a strong G maj 4 string down bow chord and Max Bruch with a powerful open G followed by an arpeggio theme rising to the high |E where E string theme fingering is uninhibited by other strings in the way. These both begin with a raised right arm at the frog ,ready to fall. My surname[ accociated with a famous 16c natural physicist of gravity and ergonomic theories fame ] has not hindered my curiosity with musical kinaesthetics!

Principles of mirror image symmetry apply to bowing the same as for scissors left hand drive motor cars and golf clubs, cricket, ; that is, adaptation to the same ease of access enjoyed by right handers. Note an apocryphal theory of right handed swordsmen, when meeting ,head on , adversary by taking to the left roadside for protection.

@picknngrinn, I can honestly say...I feel your pain...as do many in the fiddling and picking family. Sooner or later it seems like the aches and pains and injuries we get from playing our instruments (or otherwise) can really hamper our participation and enjoyment. I hope you take comfort in the fact you are not alone, on the contrary, you have a lot of company. And I hope the fond memories of playing in your past brings a bit of solace. Hang in there, and stop by the Joy of Fiddling channel anytime for mood boost or stroll down music memory lane.
